A scrimmage, for the purposes of the archive, is typically a gathering of several teams during the build season and before official events begin where teams can test out their robots against other robots designed to play that year's game. Some scrimmages may have a more rigid match schedule, while others are more casual like demos and may involve long periods of simply testing out robot interactions and game piece manipulation. Some more organized scrimmages have evolved into "week zero" events, which operate somewhat similar to offseason events with a seeding and playoff structure. Photographs or other materials that take place at a scrimmage should be tagged scrimmage.
Noted below are early and/or notable scrimmages
1996
In 1996 at least two scrimmages were held in the Chicago area, with one hosted by team 13 at the Baxter Healthcare building and attended by team 81, and another which included both aforementioned teams as well as team 111. The Baxter scrimmage was included as part of the 1996 ESPN special about the FIRST Robotics Competition.
The other scrimmage was held in a gymnasium and was shown in team 111's 1997 team video. It was likely hosted by team 111 and Motorola, as Motorola banners appear around the field. It also appears that Dean Kamen was in attendance.
1997
In 1997 the first UTC Scrimmage was held for UTC-sponsored teams.
