The 1995 New England Tournament was the first official competition of the 1995 FIRST Robotics Competition season. The tournament took place at Memorial High School in Manchester, New Hampshire from February 24th to 25th, 1995. Two fields were set up end to end and matches were played back and forth to speed up match turnaround time. Although Dean Kamen refers to this (and the canceled North Carolina tournament) as "regionals" during the 1995 kickoff and in some game materials, teams did not need to attend the regional to qualify for Nationals. 32 teams competed in the New England Tournament, compared to 48 at the National competition.

Tournament recap[3][edit | edit source | hide]
The first round of the double elimination round saw competitive teams like team 151 and team 42 both lose, with team 42 beating 151 in the second round of the tournament. In the final double elimination round before the semifinals, team 157 overshot the top platform and tipped over the far side, with a team member reaching out to try to stop the robot. Initially, the match played on, with opponent team 90 receiving no points for the match for being in contact with the goalpost while scoring. During a timeout where even Dean Kamen tried to help fix the Aztec Empire machine, officials discussed the team member reaching onto the field and ended up awarding the victory to J.A.B.S.
The semifinal rounds were between team 90 and team 80 and team 131 against team 73. Team 80's chain lift broke in their second semifinal and J.A.B.S. won in two matches. C.H.A.O.S. similarly beat team 73 in two matches after their drive chain broke in the first match. Team 90 could only score from the top platform, while C.H.A.O.S. could score from the top or bottom of the goal, and J.A.B.S. decided to shut out team 131 from scoring and tipped the robot over, entangling it in the field perimeter fence. Both robots ended up scoring no points and the tiebreakers eventually found team 90 the winner of finals one. Team 131 avoided being tipped in the second match and won it to tie the series. Both robots picked up their large balls in the third finals match. As 131 went to score, 90 knocked the ball free from their grasp and 131's robot tumbled down the ramp. As 90 went to score, they also dropped their ball, sending it down the ramp and out of the field as time expired. The ball was replaced on the platform after the buzzer higher than team 131's, giving 90 an apparent advantage in the tiebreakers.
Woodie Flowers explained that this situation was covered in the rules and a decision had been made, however if both teams agreed to replay the match before hearing the results they would be allowed to play the round over. The teams did not decide to replay the match, and the ruling that a ball that is out of bounds when time expires is out of play gave the match and tournament to team 131.
